Character Information
Name: Goku SonWestern format looks so weird omg
Canon: Saiyuki
Canon Point: After being attacked during the Even a Worm arc.
Age: Appears to be around 18-19, but is really over 500 years old.
History: Here!
Personality: At first glance, Goku seems like the token childlike, mascot-type character of the group. And... well, you aren't wrong, actually. He pretty much is the mascot, if the Journey to the West legend is any indication, as he's a variation of the Monkey King himself with quite a bit of artistic license, much like the rest of the series. Ever brimming with energy, he's always there to argue with Gojyo or get smacked with a fan and told to shut up after complaining about being hungry. He's rarely without a smile on his face, bringing cheer and optimism to the group when the others might be down. Of course, much like the Monkey King, he can get into his fair share of trouble with or without meaning to, but he always has the best intentions at heart.
Goku is a cinnamon roll. That's all there is to it. If someone is in need of help, he does his best to help them, even if he might occasionally botch something and cause trouble. He always feels remorse for it, of course, and doubly so if it makes things harder on Sanzo, but he does try. After all, some people really need it. Those that are being bullied by youkai or are struggling to survive, he'll drop everything to do what he can, whether that comes to dispatching the bothersome youkai or just helping to chop wood or other household chores, and especially if he's being fed. Kindness for kindness! It's only fair.
Gojyo may be the cockroach of the group, but Goku definitely has his fair share of similar characteristics in the sense that he just doesn't get knocked down. Both physically and emotionally, he is incredibly resilient and determined; in canon, he's been bested in a fight before, but rather than mope about being beaten, he broods about it in a different way. He was beat, sure, but what could he do better to make sure he wins out the next time? What can he do to get stronger? In the same vein, he sees fighting as something incredibly fun. Fighting a powerful opponent and being challenged gives him the thrill of a lifetime, and there's nothing he likes better than facing off against someone he views as strong. He even went so far as to gawk over Gat's muscles and flail sparkly-eyed at how strong he must be.
For all of his outward enthusiasm and energy, though, Goku is not without his weaknesses. Harking back to his want to help people, sometimes Goku is a little too trusting, leading him to misread a situation and get himself in trouble. Once a person indicates that they're up to no good, no matter how big or small the offense, he'll immediately recoil from being friendly with them, but it may already be too late by that point. It doesn't help, either, that he's easily riled up. Gojyo knows this firsthand, and uses it to instigate fights rather often. It almost always results in Sanzo hitting the both of them and yelling at them to shut up, or threatening them with his gun. Even though Gojyo does this on purpose, and Goku is aware of the fact, he still can't help letting his anger get the better of him.
One of Goku's biggest weaknesses, though, is a fear. Fear of being abandoned, fear of being left alone or locked up again. While he can't remember anything prior to being imprisoned for 500 years inside the cave on the mountain, he still very vividly remembers the imprisonment itself, and how lonely it was and how much he cried out for someone to save him. The prison was cold and dark; the sun didn't even shine into it, since it faced away from east or west, and in the winter, the snow made everything deathly silent. He actually had a fear of snow for a while because of this, though his new family - Sanzo, Hakkai and Gojyo - eventually coaxed him out into it and helped him to overcome his fear. But while that fear could be overcome, the fear of abandonment still very strongly sticks with him, and it's not something he can shake.
His "family" is incredibly important to him, though, and his number one priority outside of looking out for his own life. Goku is extremely loyal, most notably to Sanzo, and will do anything for any of them. They're all that he has, and the most important aspects of his life - Sanzo, the leader; Gojyo, the adoptive older brother; Hakkai, the teacher. Losing any of them would be a horrible blow, so of course he'll fight to defend the group if necessary. Fate brought them together, after all, though neither he nor the others know it - Sanzo, Hakkai and Gojyo are all reincarnations of those that Goku held close during his time living in Heaven, and they've managed to find each other again in this life. Call it coincidence, or perhaps they somehow called out to each other, but Goku is solidly attached, and he doesn't want to lose a single one of them. Even if Gojyo is a stupid pervert and keeps smoking those nasty, stinky cigarettes all the time.
Abilities: Goku is a natural fighter. He's skilled in martial arts, both hand-to-hand combat and with nyoibou, and is a force to be reckoned with. Daily redshirt youkai stand no chance. In addition to being incredibly agile, he also appears to have quite a bit of physical strength for someone so small, so wielding nyoibou against someone is, if not deadly, at least extremely painful.
His appetite is also not one to be dealt with lightly, as being imprisoned for 500 years has led his body to begin catching up with that long period of time where he ate nothing. He also seems to show some heightened senses - notably his nose, but his other senses are likely enhanced as well, considering he is still a variant of youkai.
Goku does have another, much darker side to his abilities. While kept at bay by his diadem the majority of the time, Goku's true form is the Seiten Taisei, a powerful being birthed from the aura of the earth itself and nigh unstoppable. As Goku, he is already strong and fast enough to be able to beat most any foe he comes across, but as the Seiten Taisei he is practically invincible. He has been shown to be able to move so fast that he looks like he's teleporting, in one place one moment and right in his enemy's face the next. He's much, much stronger, as well, and has the reputation of single-handedly massacring a large part of Heaven 500 years prior to canon. He can also use the energy of the earth to repair any damage done to him, as seen when Hakkai and Gojyo purposefully remove his diadem in order to keep him from dying. Most terrifying of all, though, is the fact that in this form, destruction is his only goal. He will attack anyone or anything that gets in his way, and will do so viciously and without restraint. ... and this, unfortunately, also includes friends as well as foes. His own friends have been at the end of Seiten Taisei's claws, and afterwards, he always shows extreme remorse for what he's done.
The only thing that can stop him is his diadem, which subdues the Seiten Taisei form and returns him to normal. Sanzo and Kanzeon Bosatsu have been shown to be able to create another one if the original diadem has broken or been lost, but as long as the diadem still exists, it can be placed back on his head to the same effect. Once he's returned to normal, though, he cannot recall anything that happened while the diadem was off.
Of course, he won't remember anything about himself in general here. But he'll still reflexively flinch and become defensive if someone goes for his diadem.
Strengths: Loyal, determined, friendly, eager, resilient.
Weaknesses: Too trusting, tends to cause trouble unintentionally, easy to rile up, easily distracted, afraid of being trapped and/or abandoned.
God/Shinki: Shinki
Why?: Though Goku is effectively something similar to a god, that part of him is sealed away 99.999% of the time. I could make the argument for him in either direction, but I think it would be more fun to play him as a shinki simply because it both involves memory loss - something which he's experienced before in canon - and because of his diadem and possible shenanigans involving it when he can't remember anything about himself. Not to mention, in their little group, he's perfectly fine letting Sanzo take the lead, and he's happy to follow. Plus, who doesn't want a monkey sidekick?
Cause Of Death: Succumbing to his wounds before Hakkai can suggest removing his diadem to force his body to regenerate. (Relevant chapters here and here!)
Vessel: Nyoibou
Name Location: 強 - Kyouki - stomach
Power: Geokinetic Regeneration
